Burnt Friedman’s Nonplace label fronts another release by the German sonic adventurer. This record sees the electronics maestro joining forces with Iranian tabak player Mohammad Reza Mortazavi for a record of exploratory almost-groove music. With electronica as a field so often obsessed with repurposing the sounds of non-Western cultures to the purposes of groove or mood, it is highly enriching to hear two musical strata coming together as equals as they do here. With Mortazavi’s playing generally dictating the ebb-and-flow, Friedman weaves spare, impressionistic soundscapes around them. A quietly engaging, and engaged, record.
