Florian Kupfer’s latest EP for Long Island Electrical Systems contains four bits of moody, mature techno. Each of the offerings here have a weirdly airless feel to them that is strange and compelling. Opener ‘Contact’ sounds like if Moby had been drafted in at the last minute to add some gloss to the theme music from the X Files. ‘Random Chaos’ is a drunken lo-fi roller that inhabits a space similar to recent work from Peder Mannerfelt and Neil Landstrumm, and ‘Z’ does a similar thing while its lopsided drum tracking nods to Pearson Sound and Joe. Strangest of all is ‘TY’, a conflagration of heart monitor beeps, hissing New Age-y synths and sparse drums. Overall, an oddly pleasurable affair.
