Plume is the fourth studio album from Canadian sound designer Loscil on the seminal Chicago-based experimental outpost Kranky and is a fine example his now well established, intricate and highly absorbing soundscapes. The piece deals in equal parts ambient drift and subtle rhythms, managing to enrapture and traverse moods with slight melodic touches. Opening pieces ‘Motoc’ and ‘Rorschach’ paint a rather dark environment, with the processed guitar drones akin to label mate Tim Hecker’s on RaveDeath albeit less visceral, yet the shimmering rhythms and warm piano undertones of ‘Zephry’ pave the way for the warmer, more mellow drones of ‘Steam’. ‘Chinook’ and ‘Bellows’ deal in lighter textures, decorated with slight bells and tonal surges, followed by the soothing, ambient fuzz of ‘Halycon’, which recalls the dense, pacifying essence of Keith Fullerton Whitman’s ambient landmark Playthroughs. In all, it's a window to a more genial world, marking the high water mark in an already celebrated back catalogue.
