Like so many good records, Lasso Yo was born of strife. Daniel James struggled with personal demons throughout the writing process for his latest Canon Blue outing. As such, the LP slots neatly into the Nashville singer-songwriter lineage despite its sonic aesthetic being far richer than your average bar-room soundtrack. The musical style here is a thick, slightly quirky synth-pop that recalls John Grant and Gotye. While songs like ‘Dedicate’ and ‘Take 6’ teem with ideas, James’s focus on songcraft and storytelling reigns them into coherent structures to powerful effect.
