A killer compilation from Rush Hour here. With genres like Kwaito, Shangaan electro and Gqom now woven into the fabric of club music history, it’s easy to forget that these genres came from somewhere. Pantsula! gives that story a beginning. The twelve tracks of this compilation all surfaced between 1988 and 1990, capturing a moment where South African artists began to shift away from the American dancefloor and forge an increasingly localised club sound. The chunky disco grooves here dovetail with marimbas, pianos and vocals to ebullient effect. Be it at home or in the dance, Pantsula! is a killer listening experience.
