The modest Höga Nord Rekords have pulled off quite the coup with the signing of the new album from British sesh legend Andrew Weatherall. In contrast to the 808-fetishism of July’s Kiyadub EP, here we have Weatherall in full psych-beat mode. Drawing from classic Krautrock, psych-rock and ambient stylings as well as his own early-90’s work with Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine, Qualia is a multi-faceted LP of beautiful, mind-expanding music. Many of the tracks sit on rigid single-note bass grooves while letting guitars, synths and effects spiral out in myriad directions atop them. The times when Weatherall removes the beats and lets the music drift, like on the New Age-y ‘Soft Estates’, are similarly cosmic.
