Phillip Quehenberger's long awaited LP debut, like a lot of stuff on Emego, seems to be immune from easy categorization. The tracks on this album fall somewhere between being recognizable and completely strange, punchy and ambient, by opening psychedelic trap doors and windows Quehenberger leaves the listener floundering. "Phantom in Paradise" is the sort of album you could play to a club, but the audience would have to second guess their own dance-steps. He's taken the energy of his ecstatic live performances and crafted a diamond of a release. From the catchy riffs of 'Loner Goner', to the polyrhythmic Underground Resistance-like 'Varad' and the scorching twisted keyboard distortion of 'Verdammst!'.
