In a similar manner to the MONDO label, Data Discs specialise in the pressing of early video-game music to vinyl. In this instance the focus of their affections is Tohru ‘Master’ Nakabayashi’s soundtrack to the Sega Mega Drive classic Altered Beast. Though it is made from many of the standard 80’s arcade tropes - 8-bit synths and bright chiptune sound effects being the most obvious - the music here is notably dark compared to contemporaneous releases. It might be Nakabayashi’s penchant for droning bass notes, or the ghoulish voice that introduces the tracks, or simply the metal-as-f*ck aesthetic, but Altered Beast is an eerie sugar rush.
