Demdike Stare’s dds imprint (Micachu, Equiknoxx) presents an intriguing release from polymath music-maker Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe. Levitation Praxis Pt. 4 documents a work Lowe made on commission by the New York Museum of Art and Design in 2016. Given access to some of the sound artist/furniture designer Harry Bertoia’s collection of ‘Sonambient sculptures’, Lowe spins out a lengthy work of great scope and scale. Through striking, brushing and hitting Bertoia’s metal structures, Lowe creates a piece which is by turns unsettling, brooding and beautiful. While the sound of Levitation Praxis Pt. 4 touches on ambient composition, doom metal and contemporary classicism, it really is a singular work.
