We don’t tend to hype up records by calling them ‘essential’. It’s often a shoddy tactic to boost sales and when bandied around too much the phrase tends to lose all meaning. This record, however, is a certified gem from the mid 90s golden era of misty eyed, futurist inspired electronic dance music. Jochem Peteri juxtaposes deep, faux-new age ambient sketches with rugged drum machine tracks with a deftness and talent that sounds as brilliant today as it must have done back then. ‘Mayflower’ is usually the track that’s name checked but it’s the blink and you’ll miss it FM synth sheen of Hybrids I & II that make it an all-rounder.
