Queens of the Stone Age and Mark Ronson? Seems an odd fit on paper. However, when you consider that QOTSA’s last album, 2013’s ...Like Clockwork, scored them their first US number one, and that Josh Homme has had a hand in turning the Arctic Monkeys into the desert rock world-beaters that they are today, then the combination starts to make more sense. Anyway, Villains sees Ronson do a good job of balancing his trademark off-centre pop production with the more grizzled stylings of Homme et al. Singles ‘The Evil Has Landed’ and ‘The Way We Used to Do’ are the sort of sinewy rawk ditties that the band’s name has become a byword for over the past two decades.
