Liars are on their eighth album now. We say ‘their’ - the only remaining member of the original crew is singer Angus Andrew, with Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross having jumped ship after their previous LP Mess. For TFCF - which stands for Theme From Crying Fountain, by the way - Andrew largely goes it alone, albeit with some assistance from Butchy Fuego (The Boredoms, San Gabriel). Interesting, then, that the album bares at least some resemblance to Mess, which was about as fun as noise rock could get without it turning into dance-punk. ‘Cred Woes’, for instance, sounds like Nick Cave if he ditched the Bad Seeds and teamed up with Modeselektor. Elsewhere ‘Coins In My Caged Fist’ is St Vincent if she lent harder on the electronics.
