For their ninth studio album Every Country’s Sun, Mogwai haves twisted their majestic post-rock stylings into some of their most accessible and visceral music yet. Following on from the gorgeous lead single ‘Coolverine’, ‘Party in the Dark’ sees the band delivering arguably their catchiest tune ever. The track’s propulsive groove and soaring keys are reminiscent of New Order at their most anthemic, while the skyscraping ambiences recall Ride, My Bloody Valentine and other shoegaze heavyweights. It being Mogwai, the track builds to an appropriately ginormous close. B-side ‘Eternal Panther’, a snarling post-punk number reminiscent of Idlewild, is also an essential cop.
