Something of a byword for contemporary Afrobeat excellence these days, ‘your favourite band’s favourite band’ return with their sixth studio album. Despite another shuffling of personal, it is a testament to the Antibalas ethos and the respect the name now commands that Where The Gods Are In Peace maintains the same high standards of musicianship as their other releases. Of course there is plenty of Kuti-worship across the LP, but the band’s ability to incorporate contemporary jazz, funk, psych-rock and other globalist stylings into their sound is what makes them such a consistently interesting proposition. Even two decades deep they show no signs of slowing down - there aren’t many bands living or dead who can match the energy of opener ‘Gold Rush’.
