Joakim’s Smalltown Supersound back with another interesting release. Label mainstay Prins Thomas gives Dungen’s 2016 album for the label a good going over for this collection of remixes and versions. With the original record itself a soundtrack to the 1929 animated film Adventures of Prince Achmed, it is unsurprising that much of the music here has a cinematic sweep to it. Starting from the base material of group’s heady psych-rock, Thomas alternately turns the music to Krautrock, Balearicism, ambience and psychedelia. Tracks like ‘Trollkarlen och fågeldräkten (VERSION 2)’ contain a dark, propulsive energy, at once sexy and unsettling, that counts as unexplored territory for both Thomas and Dungen.
