As well as pushing out some crucial reissues, Soundway Records continue their aural bombardment of 2017. XOA is the solo/collaborative project of multi-instrumentalist and Gentleman’s Dub Club member Nick Tyson, this first release sees him blend the house and broken beat sounds of his native London with the warmth and energy of golden-era Afrobeat. This is evidenced in opening track ‘Mass’, which sees live instrumentation ride seamlessly over a bubbling acid bassline and crisp snares. This is followed by the tremendously funky Mon Ecole, which features samples recorded on a recent trip to Senegal. Alongside this record, the growing reputation for his DJ sets and live performances certainly make XOA one to keep an eye on!
