Serious stuff here from the OG Illum Sphere and a select group of friends. Five producers set to work on tracks from his 2016 LP Glass, and it’s a serious array of talent on show. The opening dubs from Beau Wanzer and Machine Woman are united by a general air of dystopian nightmarishness - the former an unnerving techno banger, the latter a sort of alien hip-hop that seems wrent from the darkest corner of Shabazz Palaces’ discography. Things mellow out a little on Hieroglyphic Being’s detailed flip of ‘Red Glass’, the sort of jazzy Detroit niceness that we have come to know and love from HB. Gavsborg turns ‘The Journey’ into mutant dancehall, while Fotomachine’s ‘Wounded’ remix returns proceedings to the same eerie space in which the EP began.
