Genres

In a rather surprising turn, Our Head Technician dives headlong into his rarely portrayed post-punk influences with The Spiral. Cutting six ghostly tracks across a swirl 10" edition and coming housed inside a gloriously designed old school gatefold, The Spiral perfectly bridges the gap between the haunted VHS wave of his Black Mill Tapes series and the recent Arctic illumination of his Stasis LP.

Much like his previous Death Waltz outing 'Stars Shine Like Eyes/Quasar II', The Spiral sees PYE returning to soundtracks as an influence to draw from for his second turn on the highly valued archivists. Where Shine... pulled from the mystified audio of Popul Vuh and Tangerine Dream, The Spiral pushed the sound into the road movie electronic desolation of Chris Petit's Radio On, imagine if its protagonist had kept driving past Bristol and let the tape deck chew up his copy of Radioactivity for a taste of the expansive offering PYE offers up here.

The Spiral is prime time Our Head Technician techno, giving the genre a Twin Peaks style spin into an alt-universe spooked out disco that has the Radiophonic Workshop performing as its in-house band, while Snake Plissken mans the wheels of steel, digging deep into his stash of early '80s private press 7"s, each one ripe with the kind of chugging arpeggios and rolling analogue drum machine synthwave that you would expect to find in the very best Silent Servant mixes.

No turning your back on this one, it's as good as they come.
