Having stepped into the spotlight with 2016’s GENKIDAMA EP on XL, Gila (formerly Gila Monsta) now offers six tracks on Benji B’s Deviation. There is more than a whiff of Evian Christ’s Kings & Them to Pick Six - by no means a bad thing, as anyone who has heard that releases will agree. The heady brew of cloud-rap, trap, trance and psychedelia within both provides Gila with great scope and also focusses his aesthetic. Cuts like ‘Psycho Dabber’ and ‘Cold Leaf’ could in other hands tail off into formless beat-loop stuff, but Gila’s deft touch means they come across like the collabs between Metro Boomin and Clams Casino we all dream about.
