Grandbrothers make the leap to City Slang for their sophomore LP. While the press release for Open bills it as an exercise in ‘atmospheric Krautrock’, the ebb and flow of the album feels initially more suited to the classification of contemporary classical music. With producer Lukas Vogel processing Erol Sarp’s piano playing in real time, the pair craft beautiful and rather hopeful soundscapes that touch on the work of Oval, Sigur Ros and early Four Tet. While Open certainly shares Krautrock’s penchant for experimentation (and liberal use of glockenspiel), the Grandbrothers have crafted something here that goes far beyond the motorik.
