Sevdaliza’s eagerly-awaited debut LP delivers on the promise of her previous EPs. ISON is a gripping, sensual experience in a manner akin to Portishead’s Dummy or Bjork’s Homogenic. The likes of opener ‘Shahmaran’ are brooding, woozy combinations of trip-hop beats, rich string arrangements and Sevdaliza’s beguiling vocals. Her singing is beautiful and powerful, and the spoken-word passages that pepper the album are uniquely arresting. Singles ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and ‘Human’ sound as good as they did back in 2016, and the FKA Twigs comparisons still stand up - not just in terms of overall aesthetic, but also in the pair’s penchant for successfully incorporating visceral or avant-garde production choices into well-crafted modern r&b.
