Halogen is the first of two releases scheduled to drop in 2017 that will collate the output of the late Icelandic producer Biogen, aka Sigurbjörn Þórgrímsson. Collected by Nina Kraviz and dropped on her TRIP label, Halogen spans the 1990s and 2000s and demonstrates the producer’s expansive range as well as foregrounding the playfulness and curiosity for which Þórgrímsson was known to his friends. As is to be expected from a career retrospective, Halogen cycles through a great many styles: ‘Bliss’ and ‘Autofloat’ are cathedral-sized ambient pieces; the ‘Lag’ tracks contain the sort of breakbeat and hyper-techno that left a mark on his contemporary Björk; and ‘303 Ambient’ takes the classic acid-maker to exciting new places.
