Mischievous Icelander Bjarki’s BBBBBB imprint fronts the Swurlk EP from EOD. EOD’s Bandcamp numbers about thirty releases and he claims that he has literally gigabytes of music ready to go. With so much to choose from, it’s no surprise that Swurlk strikes gold on each of its four cuts. The influences come thick and fast - opener ‘Swurlk (snarlfingercroak mix)’ brings to mind Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Grimes and the music from the Wipeout games within the first couple of minutes. One thing that does unite most of the tracks is a general air of melancholy and poignancy amid the harmonies even when the drums are building solid techno grooves, and the interplay between rhythm and melody here is quite beautiful. That said, ‘Swarm’ is pretty much as close to sonic carnage as you can get with just a 909 and a synth.
