The second LP from Leipzig’s Lake People sees light of day on Mule Musiq (DJ Sprinkles, Chaos in the CBD). Recorded on a bunch of analog gear in 2016 and 2017, Phase Transition is a record that is alive with the very best of the German electronic tradition. The club wedges here - ‘Frame of Reference’, ‘Subsurface’ and ‘Mutual Isolated’ to name but three - are simultaneously expressive and dead-eyed, expansive and intimate. Similar feelings remain when the drums are stripped away on ‘Fabula’ and the stirring ‘Syuzhet’. Somewhere between the two we have the likes of ‘Cathartic’ and ‘Tomorrow’s Happiness’ where more reserved grooves jostle for attention with some dextrous harmonic interplay.
