Emmy-nominated composer Ben Salisbury and Portishead/BEAK> head-honcho Geoff Barrow unite to score an episode of the third series of Charlie Brooker’s love-it-hate-it-either-way-everyone’s-talking-about-it Black Mirror. Having won an Ivor Novello award for their soundtrack to Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, the pair’s particular brand of cinematic composition fits excellently with the techno-dystopian eeriness of Brooker’s show. Their music for ‘Men Against Fire’ sees the pair bring the best out of each other again. The score here is a mix of Bernard Herrmann-style string scrapings, unsettling cut-and-paste samples and chugging analog synths. One to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
