While Chromatics fans wait for Dear Tommy, an album that is slowly becoming the indie world’s answer to Guns ‘n’ Roses’ Chinese Democracy, band leader Johnny Jewel drops two EPs to quench thirsts for the time being. The Key is a strictly instrumental affair, largely built of whirring drum loops and b-movie synthesisers. The short tracks here err closer to beat-tape entries than fully-formed songs, allowing Jewel to try on new styles if he pleases - for instance on the industrial throttle of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it ‘Free Fall’.
