The fifth release on B12 venture Firescope Records is the first not to feature B12 as a lead artist. On Elements Unknown the reins are passed over to John Shima, and the seasoned rave vet comes through with four emotional, warm techno cuts that recall LFO and other 90s luminaries. Most of the tunes here unfurl slowly, with rhythms tentatively coaxed out over the course of several minutes as pads and synths purr above them. Even ‘Implant’, the most obviously dancefloor-focussed tune here due to its persistent four-on-the-floor, is notable for its restraint and tenderness. A welcoming and friendly release that will bear fruit both when played out and at home.
