Following their withdrawal from The Black Dog in 1997, Andy Turner and Ed Handley as Plaid presented Not For Threes as their debut LP on Warp Records. Widely regarded as an electronic masterpiece, Not For Threes is also noted for its collaboration with Nicolette, Mara Carlyle and Icelandic eccentric Bjork. Skittering beats lead the way on stop/start opener ‘Abla Eedio’ followed by the upbeat, steel drum melodies of ‘Kortisin’ and the fiddly drum programming of ‘Headspin’. The collaborative ‘Rakimou’ sets a more melancholic, emotional tone, however the high watermark comes when Bjork’s haunting vocals collide with Plaid’s deft production on ‘Lilith’. Not For threes is an excellent example of emotionally charged electronica and a perfect entry point for this genre-defining act.
