Legendary Mancunian artist Rick Tomlinson (Twisted Nerve, Finders Keepers) makes a startling return with a brand new album Phases Of Daylight, the first release on his freshly launched Voix imprint.
Having been a key cog in Andy Votel and Dom Thomas's pre-Finders Keepers imprint Twisted Nerve, Rick Tomlinson was responsible for some of the label (and at the time, the North of Englands) most spellbinding music. Alongside David Tyack and Naomi Heart he recorded one of the most life-affirming albums to emerge from Manchester's rich musical history, and as Voice Of The Seven Woods he was a leading light within Twisted Nerve's rich catalogue. It's this self-titled disc that we find Rick returning to for Phases Of Daylight.
Phases Of Daylight goes a long way to updating the wintery acid drenched psych of his Twisted Nerve discography while adding vast new realms to his singular sound. Almost as if he has been hibernating for the past ten years, gathering thoughts and ideas yet staying in the shadows perfecting his craft. The snowfall breeze still whistles strong through his recordings, yet the homespun feel calls to mind the work of Flaming Tunes, Wyatt and Eno's Another Green World.
Rick Tomlinson maybe to some an unknown entity, but the importance of his music can not be overstated. His early recordings acted as a sort of blueprint for the cinematic touchstones of Demdike Stare's earliest output, the Folklore Tapes research of David Orphan & Andy Votel's Pre-Certified material. Returning to the foggy moors a decade later he has lost none of that magic that makes his music bask us in a kind of awe and reverence and wonder.
