Deadbeat’s digital dubs and oddball take on techno have seen him steadily gather momentum in the 2010s, launching the Canadian producer into the RA top 1000. His LP Roots and Wire, originally released in 2008, sees him operating at 100%, running the full gauntlet of what he is capable of. ‘Rise Again’ kicks off the record with dark intent, a Paul St. Hilaire vocal riding atop a murky riddim to take things into full King Midas Sound territory. ‘Roots and Wire’ throws a curveball by applying a dubby half-time to classic techno drum work, and ‘Xberg Ghosts’ is a visceral, pounding drum track. As that title might expect, there is a clear Berlin influence here - ‘Groundation (Berghain Drum Jack)’ and ‘Sun People (Dub Divisionaire)’ are worthy of wearing the names of two of the city’s proudest clubs, and middle-of-the-record pairing ‘Night Stepping’ and ‘Deep Structure’ are crying out to wreck a Friedrichshain dancefloor.
