Sheffield’s CPU sister label Computer Club continues on its run of idiosyncratic, charming IDM with the debut album from AB2088. Based across the Pennines from the Steel City, something of the classic Manchester sound is present in cuts like ‘Permafrost’ and ‘Bokglobules’, albeit appearing here in a pared-back form. In these tracks, loose variations on classic house forms find new energy in the way AB2088 lets them run much freer than they would on traditional club tracks - an example being the inventive way that the wiggly bassline of ‘Permafrost’ mutates across the piece. Elsewhere works like ‘Subsurface Ocean 1’ and ‘Terraform’ take a more obvious run at the dancefloor, albeit with the quirk and invention of the other entries on Sagittarius still on show.
