Teklife turn things upside down with the killer on announce live drop comp ON LIFE, pulling together pretty much every name in the scene worth keeping tabs on to create a snapshot of where the crew and the entire footwork scene is at in 2017.
In true footwork style, near enough every track is a collaboration, with the range moving from household names DJ Earl, RP Boo, Taso, Traxman, DJ Taye, DJ Manny, DJ Paypal & tons more beside. Just as exciting though is the range of new names freshly initiated into the crew; DJ BIG HANK and Sirr TMO, DJ Chap and DJ Phil, A.Fruit, MEL G... the list goes on.
Having recently moved the drum rolls into record racks that take on a more jungle / drum & bass direction, ON LIFE shows the different strands of the sound. From the cloud rap x dub techno of On Deck, that sounds like Main Attrakionz jamming with Echospace. To ICE CREAM that borrows largely from Danny Break's '93 classic Droppin Science Volume 01. Footwork appears to be in an incredibly exciting place now, ripe with innovation and sampler in hand, ready to dive back in time and pinch samples from across genre.
To be honest, not since the heady mid '90s explosion of jungle into all the different spawns it produced - techstep, artcore, liquid, gangsta hardstep - have we seen an underground music culture and scene be able to expand into so many different styles and sounds such as footwork now. Chicago by birth, and like the original house sound that emerged there back in the late '80s, the city and its scene is showing no sign of slowing down its innovation and direct drive that is pushing things FWD in a very reeeeel way.
