In the grand tradition of hand-stamped 7” white labels, Gonzo keeps the listener guessing from beginning to end on this release. Grooves tease themselves to the front of the mix without developing into full-on drum tracks, and this seems to imply that Gonzo wants us to focus on their foregrounding of the human and animal noise here. ‘Radio Kampala’ flits between two human voices and birdsong (both, assumedly, taken from in or around Kampala), and ‘Skull Cave’ chops up another vocal over snaps of reversed sound and chatty synths. The closest genre label to this release would be field recording, but the careful curation and processing on display here implies that Gonzo would perhaps we rather saw them as found-sound compositions ala Steve Reich.
