Three years on from Wilderness of Mirrors, Lawrence English returns to the fold with an album that features, among others, Norman Westberg of Swans. The post-rock titans are an appropriate touchstone here - English’s ambiences are as wrought and grandiose as anything that band has produced, with big bass synths and cascades of reverb invoking a sense of majesty at nearly every turn. Icy and foreboding, the record sweeps you up in its huge washes of sound before cuts like ‘Requiem for a Reaper’ and ‘Negative Drone’ see the metaphorical clouds parting for moments of touching beauty.
