A record titled Music Without Discipline, songs like ‘Dance You Awful C*nt’, an album opener that is barely more than chirping hardware with no discernable melody - there is a wry smile to the work of Richard Smith a.k.a. L/F/D/M. Off the back of 2015’s M Is A Shape, Music Without Discipline is a club-punk curio that ropes in everything from industrial noise, mutant techno, chiptune and just about everything else that can be triggered from a bunch of beaten gear. There are bangers here - the aforementioned ‘Dance…’ is designed to make you do just that, roped in from an alternate reality where Optimo Records is an electroclash label, while Birds and Living Without Gain are bubbly rollers. However, it’s by embracing the LP’s idiosyncrasies that one finds real joy and, in the cases of After R Version II and Ant Hills, even some beauty.
