Out via Bristol’s ever-excellent Subtext (Fis, Blessed Initiative), Scottish sound artist Joshua Sabin’s Terminus Drift is an ambient record light on ambience. Rather than soundscapes to lose oneself in, the album’s six tracks all keep the listener on their toes with strange slabs of noise, washes of distortion and general feelings of tension and unease. Take the opening title track - a consistent low hum is punctuated by screeches, wails and general odd noises that recall one traversing a dark corridor in an eerie shoot-em-up. Lengthy closer ‘Eki’ brings to mind Mica Levi’s soundtrack for Jackie being fed through a meat-grinder, and the awe-inspiring command of sound, scale and tempo adds a hallucinatory quality to tracks like ‘Memory Trace’ and ‘Array’.
