Despite being an album produced primarily on synths and electronics, there is an endearing folksiness to Gypsy Mamba’s Magnetic Syndromes. Remove the wobbly keyboards from ‘Circles Don’t Exist’ and one is left with pastoral flutes; ‘Choker’ has something of a medieval gigue to it, albeit played in a breakbeat style. The tinges of 60’s psych-folk bear real fruit here, and rather than looking backwards the record throws those allusions to earlier musical styles together with modern technologies in a way that never sounds clunky. Indeed, Magnetic Syndromes is an album that sweeps you up in a manner that recalls the more holistic pieces by Flying Lotus or The Gaslamp Killer.
