How many musicians, artists - hell, figures of note of any sort - can you name hailing from the Russian city of Perm? Didn’t think so. But 700 miles east of Moscow is where you’ll find Gnoomes, and their second full-length Tschak! is as wigged-out as you might expect from a group of young men making music in the shadow of the Ural mountains. Things range from extreme electro-skronk (‘Super Libido Awake’, the title track) to calmer, 8-bit waters (‘Maria’) and a funny, sort-of-math-rock plain between the two (‘Cascais’, ‘Severokamsk’). Strains of Explosions in the Sky and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone here, but the energy and vitality of Tschak! puts it in a league of its own.
