Originally released in 1978 under his given name of Edward Larry Gordon, one of Laraaji’s finest works now gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Soul Jazz Records. Celestial Vibration contains two long pieces centred around zither and kalimba. Gordon’s playing glides along with great beauty, joining the dots between spiritual jazz, ambient and New Age music. Words such as ‘ethereal’ and ‘heavenly’ are often used to describe Laraaji’s work, but in this case Celestial Vibration really does have an otherworldly quality to it.
