Connan Mockasin and Late Of The Pier frontman Sam Eastgate, to some better known as LA Priest, immortalise their friendship with the release of their first album as Soft Hair. Five years in the making, the self-titled full-length was conceived during an active time in both of the artists’ solo careers, with Mockasin dropping Caramel on Phantasy in 2013, and LA Priest making his album debut on Domino in 2015.
Playful, engrossing and pleasingly twisted, Soft Hair lures us through the looking-glass, drawing us, from the outset, into a strange, upside-down world where expectations are teased and tested at every turn. An intoxicated haze seems to hang in the air as vocals come in and out of focus, flowing, funk-driven bass-lines are cut up and disrupted, and beats sound constantly on the verge of spiralling out of time. Shifting spectra of warped, rich, brassy synths fill a kaleidoscopic and psychedelic acoustic space, at once disorientating and comforting.
