Fela returned to Nigeria after finishing his music studies at London's Trinity College. Bringing together a band, Koola Lobitios, he began integrating jazz, funk and new techniques he had learnt into the traditional African music that had always provided the backbone to his life. This new musical offering, which he called 'afro-beat', caught the attention of EMI who brought Fela and the band back to London to record at Abbey Road in 1971, working with Cream drummer Ginger Baker for the first time. The result was London Scene, remarkably new and different and often credited as kicking off one of Fela's greatest periods of recording.
