Both based in Berlin, vibraphone player Masayoshi Fujita and loop-finding-jazz-records sculptor Jan Jelinek present new collaborative works for Jelinek’s label Faitiche. Strange, immersive and with faint echoes of a futuristic Mkwaju Ensemble (see ‘LesLang’), the eight tracks encompass reductionist dub elements, field recordings and Leyland Kirby esque sample manipulation. With their first work as a duo appearing back in 2010, they are evidently far from strangers to each other’s process, and on a whole Schaum feels like the end result of a winter spent huddled up in the studio in their own sonic bubble.
