The South African not-quite-house scene has been kicking off the past year or so with the explosion of the Gqom crew, but those who remember the heyday of UK funky will no doubt be familiar with DJ Mujava’s ‘Township Funk’ anthem. Standing out as one of the most interesting and unclassifiable pieces of music from those years, it’s a welcome return to see him pairing up with fellow Pretorian DJ Spoko for this six track EP. Dancehall and hip-hop influenced synths collide with hard and fast syncopated drums, with the guest vocals on ‘King Bacardi’ transforming the duos formula into something with a truly diverse appeal.
