Soul Jazz has more than carved out a name for itself as one of the best names in the reissue game, painstakingly scouring the earth for the best forgotten and hard-to-find world music. For Nigeria Freedom Sounds, the label have pooled together twenty three tracks from a variety of early 60s calypso, highlife and juju singers and musicians, selecting what they deem to be some of the best the country had to offer. With so many unfamiliar names here, who are we to judge? The playful compendium of rhythms that spread across the tracks is enough to make any music lover take note. Positive, uplifting and wonderfully archival, this is a great listen from start to end.
