Folklore Tapes seasonal compilation tradition continues with the Crown of Light, featuring new music from the Lost Tapes Record club's Carl & Brian, James Cargill's Children Of Alice, Mary & David, Magpahi, The Yellow Funz, Sam McLoughlin & more. Much like the highly lauded Merry May and Mid-Winter Rites & Revelries boxsets, Crown Of Light is an exploration into the folklore surrounding the changing of the seasons. A very spiritual time with hidden meanings and richly historic pre-Christian observances. Using the label's trademark homegrown tapestry of sound as the roots for research, the audio stories on display within Crown Of Light are themed around songs, games, stories, and rites that were a large part of the traditions associated with midsummer.
Now for most of you who live in the city, midsummer will probably pass by without much notice, when the sky is a polluted orange and the endless glow of insomniac street lights keep everything on a 24/7 axis, it's releases like this from the Folklore Tapes label that can act as a reminder as well as a way to transport you to the grassy isles of Anworth and beyond and a reminder of the changing of seasons and the importance of this within older societies. Crown Of Light is a beautifully composed and compiled compilation of psychedelic, warm glow folk for those stuck in the city, in need of an escape if only for a short while.
