Back in 2015 Nicolas Jaar dropped Pomegranates, a 20-track record composed as an unofficial soundtrack to the vaunted 1969 film The Color Of Pomegranates. A famously beautiful movie that is cited by some critics as one of the greatest motion-pictures of the 20th Century, The Color Of Pomegranates is also a work of little dialogue. No wonder, then, that Jaar was inspired to try and fill in the sonic blanks. Much of the early part of Pomegranates is impressionistic enough to be considered sound art. Muslimgauze and Oval are invoked by glitchy and obtuse entries such as ‘Survival’ and ‘Construction’. As the score wares on Jaar brings more piano and electronics into play and stumbles upon some delicately beautiful pieces reminiscent of Nils Frahm. This edition marks the first time that Pomegranates has been released on vinyl.
