It’s difficult to overstate the enormous influence of Silver Apples’ self-titled debut. Dismissed as too strange even for the 1960s, Simeon and Danny Taylor’s ramshackle early electronic fascinations and Can-goes-Simon and Garfunkel-covering-White Noise cadence seems to have predicted a plethora of underground genres. The slyly catchy melody of ‘Oscillations’ is echoed in Depeche Mode, while the staggered groove and folk flute flutter of ‘Seagreen Serenades’ recalls Animal Collective at their most earthy. This is to say nothing of the sampling innovations; hip-hop breaks and dialogue snippets give Silver Apples a sound that seems futuristic many decades later.
