The grooves of Hailu Mergia first came to the attention of most via the archival reissues Brian at Awesome Tapes from Africa has been working on over the past few years. Great hypnotic lo-fi electronics reminiscent of Mammane Sanni, his recordings have a nostalgic charm to them which actively encourage repeated listening, no doubt one of the reasons the ATFA reissues have become firm indie record store favourites. This album sees him playing with the Dahlak (Equators) band, as opposed to the more recognisable Walia’s band. Surely set to become another heavy hitter in the Awesome Tapes catalogue.
