Ecstatic Records collates a breath of archival material from Gavin Russom’s early Paper Eyes alias with Cognitive Drive Transmissions 1996 – 1998. After arriving in NYC for the first time, Russom trajected the general innate disorientation experienced after moving to a new city, along with the gritty, dark underbelly of New York into a series of grainy, ambiguous sketches spewed out of modest, DIY home studio set-up. The result is an abstracted slew of brain burps that traverse between coarse feedback growls to scruffy, primitive rhythm and curious, queasy melodies. A must check for fans of Smersh or the earlier and noticeably stranger output of Frak’s seminal Borft Records outpost.
