Following Ibiza superstar Sasha’s edition of Late Night Tales, prolific multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds takes the helm on this 44th edition. With friends and collaborators such as fellow Icelandics Samaris and Hjaltalín on the one hand, and artists that have influenced him on the other, the composer gives us a deep insight into the “soundtrack of his life”. Six months in the making, he approached the mix as he would his pieces, giving a lot of thought to its dramatic composition: although there’s a variety of textures, they’re at the softer end of the spectrum, with most songs in minor keys creating a melancholic and intimate feel throughout. He intersperses ambient moments (Julianna Barwick, Colin Stetson/Sarah Neufeld) with beat-based pieces such as ‘Orgoned’, a new exclusive under his Kiasmos moniker. In addition to echoing keys of ‘RGB’, the painfully beautiful strings of ‘Kinesthesia I’ and the saddest Destiny’s Child cover you’ll ever hear – the mix’ other exclusives – they show the core of Arnalds’ musical palette.
